Early Career Support Project

Launching a rewarding and fulfilling legal career is a challenging task that has become for many particularly daunting due to recent changes in the legal marketplace. Too many lawyers are now un- or under-employed or in unfulfilling positions for years after gaining admission to the Bar.

The Transition Assistance Services of the State Bar of California have joined forces with the California Young Lawyers Association to create the Early Career Support Project to assist recent members who have yet to find that rewarding and fulfilling legal career. The goal is to combine our resources to bring career guidance, counseling, and emotional support to those early career lawyers most in need of this assistance.

Career Development Teams

Searching for a new job, starting a solo practice, or finding a better career path can be lonely and - and let's face it - occasionally demoralizing endeavor. Our career transition support teams are modeled after the Job Search Work Teams (JSWT) pioneered by the career services firm Lee Hecht Harrison and effectively address the stress and isolation often associated with this process. One study found that compared to non-team job hunters, JSWT members:

  • Better understood the job search process;
  • Were more accountable for the ongoing search process;
  • Displayed a more positive attitude toward the process;
  • Devoted double the weekly hours to job hunting.

Our groups meet in major metropolitan areas in the evening twice a month for two hours. The groups are facilitated by experienced career counselor and career coaches and are generally composed of 6 - 12 members. Team members pay the facilitator $20 each month to participate. The balance of the cost facilitator's services are covered by this program.

Unemployed? Underemployed? The State Bar of California Can Help

In addition to the two hours of free one-on-one career counseling available to every member of the Bar, the State Bar of California, in coordination with the California Young Lawyers Association (CYLA), is beginning new career support workshops specifically geared to help young lawyers with the challenges of finding opportunities in the tough California job market while often struggling to pay back extraordinary student loan debt.
